Why wouldn’t the Yankees, who are in no way a pitching powerhouse, not make a deal for Dempster, who is second in the majors in ERA (2.25)? The Rangers (and Angels) look to be the cream of the crop in the American League and have won the pennant in the past two seasons. Rather than rent Dempster for the next two months, the Yankees let him go to Texas and strengthen an already powerful Rangers team. Dempster would not have had an effect on the 2014 salary cap and the Yankees could have let him walk after this season. Dempster would have not just added a legitimate No.2 or No.3 starter to the team, but also blocked the Rangers from adding another piece that could finally push them over the edge in October.
